The Scottish Bread Championship celebrated its 10th year this week with a record-breaking 265 entries from Scotland’s fabulous artisan bakers. Created by Andrew Whitley of Scotland The Bread and Wendy Barrie of Scottish Food Guide, the only National bread event where entries must be free from additives, ultra-processed ingredients and conform to the Real Bread Campaign standards. Bakers are also followed up with feedback on their loaves from the experienced judging team.
With the Edinburgh Bakers Trust as lead sponsor, sponsorship in kind from Scotland The Bread and Scottish Food Guide, along with numerous supporters and an army of volunteers, 14 judges deliberated and discussed, sliced and savoured an incredible range of creations from the resurrection of an ancient Roman recipe to modernist twists on classics, homage to heritage loaves from Hungary, France and Poland and celebrations of local Scottish grains.
Bakers came from far and wide, from the Northern Highlands to the Scottish Borders, bearing their bread in readiness for the day. Bakers who had been awake half the night to ensure their creations would be freshly baked for the Championship.
